The Complete Ohio Private Practice Roadmap
Understand Ohio’s LPC vs. LPCC System
Ohio’s Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist (CSWMFT) Board utilizes a two-tier licensing system:
LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor)
An entry-level, dependent license. While an LPC can legally open a private practice, they must practice under the direct supervision of an approved supervisor (LPCC-S, Psychologist, Psychiatrist) when diagnosing and treating mental disorders.
LPCC (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor)
The independent clinical license. LPCCs (and LISWs or IMFTs) can operate solo private practices and treat patients fully independently without mandatory supervision.
Recommendation: Wait until you have your LPCC to launch a truly independent solo practice.

To upgrade from an LPC to an LPCC, you must complete:
- 3,000 total hours of post-LPC clinical experience over a minimum of 24 months.
- Maximum 1,500 hours can be credited in any 12-month period.
- At least 1,500 hours (50%) must be direct, face-to-face client contact involving diagnosis and treatment.
- 150 hours of training supervision by an LPCC-S (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Training Supervision designation).
Pass the NCMHCE
Ohio requires LPC candidates to pass the NCE (National Counselor Examination). To upgrade to the LPCC, you must pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE).
CE Requirements: LPCCs must complete 30 continuing education hours every two years to renew via Ohio’s eLicense system.
Form Your Professional Limited Liability Company (PLLC)
While standard LLCs exist, licensed healthcare professionals in Ohio typically form a Professional Limited Liability Company (PLLC) to comply with state regulations restricting corporate practice of medicine and therapy.
- File the Articles of Organization with the Ohio Secretary of State online (~$99 fee).
- Designate an Ohio statutory agent.
- All members/owners of the PLLC must be licensed to provide the professional service.
Unlike New York, Ohio does not require a costly newspaper publication.
